Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Which Free Plugin Should You Use?

Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: what each free plugin includes, what costs extra, how to switch, and which one suits your WordPress site best in 2026.

Rank Math vs Yoast SEO comparison cover showing three strengths of each free WordPress SEO plugin
Quick answer

For most new WordPress sites, Rank Math is the better free pick in the Rank Math vs Yoast SEO choice: its free plugin includes a redirection manager, a 404 monitor and multiple focus keywords, which Yoast keeps in Premium. Yoast still wins if you want the simplest setup, readability feedback and the larger installed base. Both are free to start and both can be swapped later.

If you are choosing between Rank Math and Yoast SEO, the real question is not “which is more powerful”. Both write your title tags, meta descriptions, canonical URLs, schema and XML sitemap. The difference is what each plugin puts behind a paywall, how much it asks you to configure, and how painful it is to switch later.

We use Rank Math on this site, so we have a bias, and we will say where Yoast is the better fit. Everything below comes from the plugins’ own pricing pages, feature pages and WordPress.org listings, checked in October 2026.

Not sure yet whether your pages are even reachable by Google? Run the checks in our guide on how to check if Googlebot can crawl a page first, because no SEO plugin fixes a blocked page.

What the free versions actually give you

Rank Math free

Rank Math’s free plugin covers the jobs that usually cost money elsewhere. You get a redirection manager for 301, 302, 307, 410 and 451 redirects, a simple 404 monitor, role manager, breadcrumbs, and one-click importers from other SEO plugins. It also connects to Google Search Console and Analytics from inside the dashboard.

The plugin is modular, so you can turn off modules you never use, which keeps the admin menu tidy. Rank Math also offers Content AI tools that you can start using for free. Rank Math does not state the free allowance on the pages we checked, so treat it as limited and look at your own account for the current numbers.

Yoast SEO free

Yoast’s free plugin is deliberately focused. It handles titles, meta descriptions, canonical URLs, schema, XML sitemaps, SERP previews, a breadcrumbs block, FAQ and How-to blocks, a bulk editor and the readability and inclusive language checks that many writers like. It also manages llms.txt.

What you will not find in the free version is the redirect manager. If you delete or rename a page, you need a separate redirect plugin or a server rule. For the same job in Rank Math you open one screen.

Yoast’s free plugin does include a setting to redirect attachment URLs, but that is not the same as a full redirect manager for your own pages.

Rank Math Pro vs Yoast Premium: price

Paid plans matter if you want rank tracking, more schema types or extra support. Both vendors list prices before tax, so your checkout total can differ.

Plan Price (before tax) Sites Notable extras
Rank Math PRO €7.99 per month, billed annually (renews at €8.99 per month) Unlimited personal sites; client sites excluded Rank tracker (500 keywords), advanced schema generator, Google News and video sitemaps, WooCommerce and Local SEO
Rank Math Business €24.99 per month, billed annually 100 client sites 10,000 keywords tracked, priority support
Yoast SEO Premium 118.80 per year (up from 99) Not stated on the pricing page Redirect manager, internal linking suggestions, AI tools (beta), Local, News and Video SEO

Yoast’s pricing page shows USD, GBP and EUR options, so check the currency you pick. Rank Math’s price table was last updated on 3 June 2026 according to its pricing page, so confirm the live price before you buy.

Run the free versions for a month first. Most small sites never need a paid plan, and a paid plan will not rescue thin content.

Which one is easier to set up?

Both plugins start with a setup wizard. Rank Math’s includes optional Search Console and Analytics connections and an import step for your old plugin’s settings. Yoast’s free plugin leans on its integrations, such as Google Site Kit, for the same connections.

Day to day, Yoast shows a traffic-light system for SEO and readability. Rank Math shows a score with a checklist of tests. Neither score predicts rankings. Use them as a checklist, not a target.

Sitemaps can still go stale when caching interferes, whichever plugin you use. If that happens on Rank Math, our guide on fixing a Rank Math sitemap that is not updating walks through it.

How to switch from Yoast to Rank Math

Switching is safe if you take a backup first. Rank Math’s migration guide describes the process.

  1. Back up your site and your database with your host or a backup plugin.
  2. Install and activate Rank Math from Plugins > Add New.
  3. Open Rank Math SEO > Dashboard > Setup Wizard. When it asks, deactivate Yoast SEO and start the import.
  4. If you skipped the wizard, go to Rank Math SEO > Status & Tools > Import & Export, open the Yoast SEO tab under Other Plugins, tick the data you want and click Import.
  5. If you used Yoast’s FAQ or How-to blocks, go to Status & Tools > Database Tools and run Yoast Block Converter. You may need to switch on Advanced Mode to see Database Tools.
  6. Check a few posts, your sitemap URL and your homepage title before you delete Yoast.

The block conversion cannot be undone, and Rank Math recommends not running two SEO plugins at the same time. Convert blocks only after your backup is safe.

Common mistakes when choosing an SEO plugin

These slip-ups are worth avoiding when you pick or switch plugins:

  • Running two SEO plugins at once, which Rank Math discourages and which risks duplicate title tags, schema and sitemaps.
  • Chasing a green score on every post instead of fixing the page’s actual search intent.
  • Paying for Pro before you have content that needs rank tracking or advanced schema.
  • Skipping the post-switch check: sitemap URL, canonical tags and a quick look at the page source.
  • Forgetting that an update like Google’s September 2026 spam update is about content quality and link practices, which no plugin settings can fix for you.

Whichever plugin you pick, the last thing to settle is who it suits best.

Our pick for different sites

Choose Rank Math if

You want more built in for free

  • You need redirects and a 404 monitor without another plugin.
  • You want several focus keywords per post.
  • You like switching modules on and off.

Choose Yoast SEO if

You want a simple, familiar tool

  • You value readability feedback while writing.
  • You want llms.txt management in the free plugin.
  • Your team or agency already uses it.
The short version

Pick Rank Math if you want redirects, a 404 monitor and several keywords included free. Pick Yoast SEO if you want the most familiar tool with strong writing feedback. Do not install both, and back up before you switch.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rank Math better than Yoast SEO?

For free features, Rank Math includes more: a redirect manager, a 404 monitor and multiple focus keywords. Yoast is simpler to recognise and has a larger user base. “Better” depends on whether you need those extras.

Is Yoast SEO still free?

Yes. Yoast SEO has a free version on WordPress.org with more than 10 million active installs. Premium adds the redirect manager, internal linking suggestions and related keyphrases.

Can I use Rank Math and Yoast together?

You should not. Running two SEO plugins can duplicate meta tags, schema and sitemaps. Deactivate Yoast when you import into Rank Math.

Will switching SEO plugins hurt my rankings?

Not if the titles, descriptions and canonical URLs carry over. Back up first, import your data, then check a few pages and your sitemap URL. We found no official claim that switching harms rankings, but verify your own output.

Does Rank Math Pro cost more than Yoast Premium?

Rank Math PRO is listed at €7.99 per month billed annually, with renewal at €8.99 per month, before tax. Yoast SEO Premium is listed at 118.80 per year before VAT. Prices change, so check both pricing pages.
